Our music ministries at St. James fall into two main categories: (1) Our choir which sings at our Sunday morning Liturgy and other major feast days, and (2) our chanters which provide the traditional Byzantine chant which is a part of all of our services. We also have readers who recite the read portions of our services and they form the beginning ranks of our chanters. All of our texts at St. James are in English.
The music at St. James is drawn from a wide variety of styles and ethnic backgrounds. However, the first priority in all of our services is that they are all prayed in the English language. So, while we use the traditional Byzantine chant drawn from both Middle-Eastern and Greek sources, the text that is chanted in those melodies is always English. Likewise, much of our choir music is traditional Russian 4-part choral music with the text for that music always being English. Other sources for our choir music are: Kievian, Ukrainian, Serbian, and Romanian.
We always welcome and are looking for new particpants in our choir and with our chanters. If you have an interest in exploring either of these beautiful ministries, please speak to our Chanting Director, Kh. Rebecca, and/or our Choir Director, Silouani.
